Sousou and Maher Cissoko have toured all over the world playing their cross-bordering music while constantly being in motion crossing the continents having musical and human encounters as their driving force.
This duo is a genuine blend combining musical skills and charisma. Their music combines kora playing, expressive vocals as well as an energetic rhythm with influences from reggae, folk, soul & jazz. The music speaks to people regardless of age and background and originates from the ancient griot tradition where past, prescence and future are one entity.
Sousou and Maher have toured all over the world in 30 different countries, playing everything from festivals to concert halls and they have roots from both Sweden and Senegal. They both grew up in musical environments but it was their common love for West-African kora that brought them together. Maher comes from a renowned Senegalese family of kora players and Scanian Sousou is one of the few female musicians who plays the instrument. In line with the storytelling from the Cissoko family, the songs carry an important message of connections and building bridges instead of boundaries between countries and humans. This becomes very apparent as they sing in 5 different languages.
Sveriges television & Sveriges Radio have each recorded their own documentary about Souso & Maher Cissoko. The SVT series ”Folkets musik” was broadcast for the Swedish viewers during autumn 2017. At that tv-show, Swedish hit songs are interpreted by musicians from other countries. On the 3rd episode, Souse & Maher performed their version of Kapten Röd´s ”Ju mer du spottar”.
In February 2018 they released their latest album “Made of music!” The record is produced by Tina Malia and is recorded in Sweden, USA & Senegal. They´re previously booked for tours in both USA & Canada.
